TOC in Water Treatment

TOC is a measurement of the number of organic compounds in water. A TOC measurement provides vital information to industries or operators by indicating if their process water is to a suitable quality.

Ultrapure water is a requirement in pharmaceutical, semiconductor and microelectronic industries. TOC needs to be reduced in these applications to prevent jeopardisation of product quality. In other applications such as in wastewater or stormwater treatment, TOC reduction is required to improve the water quality to a safe level suitable for discharge or re-use.

How TOC Reduction is Achieved with UV

UV-Guard utilises ozone producing UV lamps for the reduction of TOC in water. These lamps emit a wavelength of 185nm which results in the formation of free radicals. These free radicals oxidise organics in the water to form Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O).

Design of TOC Reducing UV Treatment Systems

UV-Guard has data spanning a number of years detailing the impact of ozone producing UV lamps and the required UV dose to achieve a measurable reduction. As this is a specialist application, it is advised that each project is discussed with a UV-Guard engineer. As with other specialist UV applications, a greater UV dose is commonly required to reduce TOC than that of drinking water disinfection.
